In the Neapolitan theatrical performances, one of the most popular characters was “O’Fareniello”. He played the part of an endless lover, a Casanova, with the necessity to look always young. In the course of the time, he naturally aged. In order to hide the signs of aging and to fulfill the young looking duties his part required, he started covering his face with cheap flour instead of the expensive face powder. This “technique” allowed him to keep playing his part.
